  • 1 large red onion
  • 1 small habanero peppers
  • 8 ounces white vinegar- Apple cider, white or red wine will work
  • 4 ounces water
  • 1 tbsp sea salt- It's best not to use table salt since it has iodine and anti-caking additives, which can cause the pickling liquid to turn cloudy and change the color of what you're pickling.
  • 2 tbsp sugar- For a low-carb or keto option, try using monk fruit or other types of sweeteners.
  • Optional- 1 tsp of whole black peppercorns
  • Optional- 1 tsp of mustard seeds

Answers to Your Spicy Pickled Onions Questions

I’ve got your back-here are answers to some common questions to ensure your pickled onions are a hit:

Can I reduce the heat if the habanero peppers are too spicy for my taste?

Yes, you can dial down the fire by removing the seeds and inner membranes of the habanero, or switch to a milder pepper like a jalapeño for less of a kick.

How long should pickled onions marinade before they’re ready to eat?

For the best meld of flavors, let the pickled onions sit for at least 24 hours. If you’re short on patience, giving them a few hours to soak will still imbue them with some spicy character.

What’s the best way to handle habanero peppers when preparing this recipe to avoid burning my skin?

Wear gloves if possible when handling habaneros. Whatever you do, resist the temptation to rub your eyes or nose. Trust me on this one!

Can I substitute the sugar with another sweetener, and how might that affect the flavor profile of the sweet and spicy pickled onions?

Absolutely! Try honey or maple syrup for a nuanced twist.

These sweeteners bring their own unique notes that can add an extra layer of flavor, complementing the habanero’s heat with their natural sweetness.
